The Arp Certificate

If you have finished the Herschel 400 and might be looking for new worlds to conquer, give the Arp list from the Astronomical League a try. While the League suggests a 12.5 inch telescope, the C-8 owner - with a bit of persistence and skill - can successfully track down these elusive objects. While a few members of the Arp Catalog of Peculiar Galaxies are bright, be advised that most of them are close to the limits of detection for a C-8. While pitch black skies would be an asset, I found most of the Arp objects listed below (given by

NGC numbers) in conditions ranging from pretty dark to moderate light pollution. Most of the observations were made within 50 miles of the center of Atlanta and the light dome from the city and surrounding towns was a factor.

Here are most of the observations for the Arp Certificate that I made. Perhaps this indication of how an object looks through a C-8 might improve your chances of finding that object.

Good luck on the hunt!

NGC 14 Fairly large and faint galaxy. First seen by moving scope with 110x and just held with direct at that magnification. Low surface brightness. Higher magnification doesn't help much. Round with uniform brightness.

NGC 70 A small clumping of galaxies at this location. Seen as a foggy patch at 110x, the area looks like a faint nebula. Higher magnifications and averted vision bring several galaxies into view. This field needs more scope than my 8 incher to clarify. Several faint stars involved as well.

NGC 145 Very faint and difficult at 100x. Spotted with averted vision and then with direct, but not easy at all. Fairly large with no detail seen. Slightly brighter central area.

NGC 169 This faint galaxy is overpowered by close-by mag 5 or 6 star. It is seen with averted vision at 110x and held with 222x. A mag 13 star is near the edge of this round galaxy.

NGC 191 Large, round and very faint galaxy. This is close to a threshold object. Suspected at 110x and just barely seen at 142x. Close to mag. 9 double star.

NGC 221 (M32) Bright elliptical galaxy. Easy at all powers.

NGC 274/275 Fairly obvious at 110x, but a bit better at 142x. Large dim pair of galaxies. Stellar nucleus obvious in one. 222x shows a dark lane between the galaxies.

NGC 341A/B At the limits of detection at 125x. Just barely glimpsed by moving scope and using averted vision. However, this object is now sitting on the edge of the Zodiacal light with is reducing contrast in the western sky.

NGC 455 One of the most difficult objects I have located! Very faint, round galaxy picked out with Uranometria and 167x. Stellar nucleus comes and goes.

NGC 474 An interesting field of at least 3 galaxies. 470 is the brightest. Small, round with a brighter core. 474 is larger and fainter without brightening. 467 sits near a mag 9 star and is round and brighter than 474.

NGC 520 Short streak. Pretty bright. Easy at 110x.

NGC 545 Very faint glow at 167x. Not seen with lower magnifications. Round galaxy with no brightening. Suspect I am seeing the combined glow of 545 and 547.

NGC 702 Very faint round galaxy. Seen with averted vision at 125x and just held with direct at 167x. A bit north of a mag 7 star which makes a good pointer to this galaxy.

NGC 750 A pretty bright galaxy. Easy at 110x. Round with slight central brightening. Suggestion of other galaxies in field right at the edge of detection.

NGC 772 Large, bright galaxy. Easy at 110x. Bright core, round. Good at 142x.

NGC 7678 This is a fun object. While the galaxy is not very bright, it is contained in a small triangle of mag. 11 stars. The galaxy can be held with direct vision at 110x, but the stars draw the eye and it shows up better with averted vision. Galaxy appears as slightly oval and uniform in brightness. Very low surface brightness so it does not show well at 222x.

NGC 7714 Small, round galaxy that is difficult to see due to proximity of 5th or 6th mag star - 16 PSC. Faint halo surrounds bright stellar core. Best seen with averted at 142x.
